Vista and Disckeeper 10-re: defragmentation in Vista

Hi, Anyone having problems installing disckeeper 10 for Vista? It says you have to run as admin. When I right click the setup.exe to run as admin; it starts installing. Goes all the way to starting services;hangs;and says; that the disckeeper service could not start;Pls verify that you have sufficient privr\elege!!! Now; I understand this whole UAC crap;is why; but how do i get sufficient priveledge when i'm supposedly runnin it as admin???? Even tried installing with UAC completely off;still same message. Then tried to install in safe mode as admin; but;the ms installer will not work in safe mode. I wouldn't even be trying this;if MS did 2 things;which I hear they are not going to do. #1-PUT THE DEFRAG GUI BACK!!!!!!!!!!! #2- Fix defrag-cuz;even tho you can't see it working(whichin;follows-how do you really know if its working;if you can't see it?) It's broke;or not even in Vista properly. Ran a defrag -a from a admin command prompt;AFTER I ran the defrag from the console;which took over 1 hour;and said it was finished and that my files were good;no need to defrag; and the command prompt came back with a 28% file fragmentation analysis. So, Any help about 3rd party apps would be appreciated Thanks,
Jeff

I havent been able to get it installed either. I eventually gave up. If youre dual booting, then you could use diskeeper from XP. Heres a thread that discussed it. Do a search for diskeeper and there are some other threads too.

The defrag works in the background when you are not on the computer (eg idle for a while).
To prove this open Performance Diagnostic Console after you noticed lot of disk access when having been idle for a while. It will show what services have last accessed disk and the defrag will be amongst them. I've done this many times when surprised by the disk activity when nothing is going on.

Hello, I am assuming that you read my entire post. Whatever the performance console is saying; is incorrect. The problem being; #1 By taking away the gui;MSFT has pretty much;"DUMMYED" up the process. All well and good that defrag now runs in the backround/idle; if it worked correctly;to begin with. But then again;how would one easily find out this info? By removing the gui;MSFT has relegated the info to various places;the performance console being just one. If;after; you look at the performance console;you than ran a command line defrag analysis;it would show nothing accomplished, in my experience;at least;and as a side note;this was applicable to build 5384 only. In 5472 it seems;they have addressed the defrag issue. But again; with no easy access to that info;how can one really tell what is actually happening??? And which then follows; is this correct info? Many people who have dualbooted with xp have reported that;although the "black hole" of defrag in Vista;says everything is a o.k. ; looking at the partition from XP proved;that;in fact;the disc was WAY shredded. By removing this utilty;and "simplifying" things;they have actually LOST functionality;from an end-user perspective. Maybe this is intentional; and 3rd party applications will benefit;as an end result of this "intelligent" decision;from MSFT. From my perspective;however; a GROSS mistake on MSFT's part. Whatever benefit they may have assumed that was to be gained;by removing functionality;has been lost to the end user. Another example of the "progress" Vista has made over XP-NOT Jeff "droid" wrote in message
